Letting Go
You need to learn to let go of negative thoughts and old limiting beliefs because they simply clutter up your mind and drain your mental energy.
There are many reasons that we cling to things, thoughts or people that no longer serve us. Sometimes it might simply be out of habit, or a desire to be proved right. Other times the thought of letting go seems harder than holding on. But the consequences are that you may feel stuck and that rather than going with the flow of life you are fighting against the current.
Think of your mind as a filing cabinet. Like their physical counterparts, the drawers of these mental storage systems need to be sorted through and cleared out on a regular basis.
Imagine yourself opening the drawers. Take out each thought one at a time and ask yourself :
Does this thought contribute to my sense of wellbeing?
If the answer is “ no ”, then you need to let it go. It might help to write the thought down on a piece of paper so you can physically crumple it up and throw it away!
After you practice letting go all the thoughts that do not serve you, start training your brain to focus on what matters.
Do you ever find yourself rushing from one place to the next between tasks?
Do you feel as though there just aren’t enough hours in the day to even get halfway through your to do list?
The threatening approach is never going to work and it’s time to focus in what really matters to you.
It is all too easy to blow our day-to-day anxieties out of proportion and lose our sense of perspective. Next time you feel this starting to happen, try to think about the problem from the point of view of your future self. imagine yourself in a year’s time - how much will the conflict with your boss, the forthcoming presentation to the argument with your partner matter than?
